home automation options for sydney home

Sydney Smart Home Trends

If you have a busy lifestyle, you’ve likely connected your everyday devices – phones, tablets, laptops and so on – to your internet and to each other to allow you to keep informed, updated and in touch with work, family, friends and everything happening around you.

Home automation has been taking off across Sydney homes for a little while now, but with the trend of smart homes looking to continue over the coming years, if you’ve been thinking of jumping on board, now is a great time.

Home Automation Trends

Standardised Products

One of the biggest downfalls of smart home products so far has been the pain of putting together products that don’t talk to each other and don’t work on a variety of platforms provided by the likes of Apple, Google, Samsung and Amazon. Then there is also the issue of the home occupier being tied down to a particular provider, which can limit the options even further.

This reliance on a mixture of platforms and products opens home occupiers up to security vulnerabilities so it is exciting to see that companies like Fibaro Home Automation solve these concerns, making home automation simpler and more secure.

 Home Security and Access

Home security has always been important, and this is an area where smart technology like Fibaro can really step up and become a significant part of a home.  Home automation can cover security systems including:

  • Intercom systems
  • CCTV security systems
  • Alarm systems
  • Automated gates, doors and locks

Around Sydney, we are seeing an increase in the installation of keypads over more traditional door locks, as well as smart locks that can be easily fitted into existing deadbolts.

Temperature and Lighting Control

One area that Sydneysiders are particularly interested in is being able to control the temperature and lighting of their homes from work or being out with the family. What better than coming home to an already warmed room in the middle of winter, or to a cool house in the middle of a hot summer. Then there is being able to control the lights in your home – no one likes coming home to a dark house after a late night in the office; home automation systems allow you to turn on the lights before you even get home.

The benefit of being able to control the lighting and temperature in your home remotely is seen in energy savings as well as in your personal comfort. There’s no need to leave an air conditioner or heater running just to come home to a comfortable temperature or leave a light on to be able to pop the key in the door when you get home.

But it isn’t just lights and the temperature that can be set up with home automation – there are automated blinds and curtains that can be set up to open and close at certain times, saving you even more on your power bill.

Fully Integrated Home

The main reason Sydney homeowners are looking for home automation is to have a fully integrated home where everything can be run from the one device wherever you happen to be. Whether it’s the ability to turn music on and off in various rooms in the house, checking your security cameras from work, setting your alarm for the next day, or keeping track of your energy use, being able to control everything from a single device can certainly save time and energy for those running busy lifestyles.

Darren Dewerson - licensed electrician in Sydney

I started in the industry installing security alarms and CCTV camera systems 25 years ago in London. I worked on thousands of sites servicing alarm electrical systems for large building companies, schools & other locations.

When I arrived in Australia I wasn’t allowed to apply for a security licence as I was not a citizen at the time so I decided get my TAFE qualifications and retrain as an electrician which complimented my electrical assistant work in London. I have been working as an electrician in Sydney since 2005.

For just over 40 years I have been involved in all types of electrical installations, upgrades, emergency repairs and set ups.
