Have you got the correct lighting in your home?

The right home lighting is one of the most important features of a home.

Aside from being a basic necessity, lighting choices can often make or break a room in design and functionality. As each room is used for different activities and purposes, the lighting will be different in every room. There are no stringent rules when it comes to lighting, however there are different guidelines for each room that can greatly contribute to the space. Getting this light is where your qualified Sydney electrician comes in.

We’ve put together some of the do’s and don’ts of home lighting, so you can create the perfectly lit space with moods spilling into each room:

You lounge room is usually the busiest room in the house. Often a family lounge room is located to enjoy natural light, and ideally you won’t require lighting during the day.

The most popular lighting for evening is a dimmer, as you can control the mood and brightness. Lamps are also popular and the team are regularly installing wall switches that control lamps, to create a soft glow.

As a Sydney lighting specialist, our team are often asked to repair dimmer switches that don’t adjust light properly. This may indicate a faulty switch or amateur installation.

The kitchen is a task space which means you need to have bright lighting in certain areas to ensure ample workspace light. Overhead lighting is the best for any task area, and you could choose to use slightly reduced brightness for the rest of the kitchen to create a softer look and feel.

If the lights in your kitchen, or anywhere around the house, appear excessively bright but others are dim, you may have an issue with your electricity connection. This could potentially cause more problems the longer it is left, so ensure you book a qualified electrician to assess your circuit and offer solutions.

The bedroom is a space that we plan lighting based on how large it is and the use of the room. A bedroom’s lighting should be softer and create a relaxing space which is why lamps and pendants are a popular lighting choice. Overhead lighting is also popular, with dimmer switches installed to illuminate certain areas and diffuse others.

Kids Rooms

Children’s rooms are generally used for playing, studying and sleeping. At Safe n Sound, we find that having a good mix of natural light and overhead light is the perfect solution.

If your child is younger, you might consider a dimmer switch to control the lighting at bedtime, or if your child is older you might need a lamp or illumination for a desk.

One of the most underrated spaces of a home, yet one of the most used, hallways offer several lighting options.

Overhead lights are popular, as well as low wall lighting to softly illuminate the hallway walk area to offer visibility.

Bathrooms are one of the most functional spaces in your home and therefore require lighting elements to make life easier.

Often, our Sydney Electricians will install bright overhead lighting or a heat lamp with brightness options that you control. Using lights to illuminate a mirror makes it easier to see yourself clearly, and adding strip lights to darker areas  for visibility is also a popular option.

A garage is frequently used at all times of the day, and is often a darker space of the house with minimal natural light. Often electric garages have automatic lighting, however we suggest installing additional overhead lights to ensure safety and ease of visibility.

There is nothing more frustrating than stumbling around the garage at night looking for the lights!

Smart lighting

Many of our Sydney electrical clients also integrate smart lighting throughout their homes. This is a saviour when moving around or getting up in the night. Lights will switch on automatically using sensors, ensuring you can move freely without worrying about visibility. Your home is your haven, and creating a perfect blend of lighting creates life, ambience and safety.

Darren Dewerson - licensed electrician in Sydney

I started in the industry installing security alarms and CCTV camera systems 25 years ago in London. I worked on thousands of sites servicing alarm electrical systems for large building companies, schools & other locations.

When I arrived in Australia I wasn’t allowed to apply for a security licence as I was not a citizen at the time so I decided get my TAFE qualifications and retrain as an electrician which complimented my electrical assistant work in London. I have been working as an electrician in Sydney since 2005.

For just over 40 years I have been involved in all types of electrical installations, upgrades, emergency repairs and set ups.
