Tesla home charger installation costs for electric vehicles

EV charger installation costs for a Tesla can be less than $3,500 inc gst depending on the model of charger you purchase & whether a single or Tesla 3 phase charger installation is requested. The average cost to install a Tesla EV charger in Sydney will vary slightly depending on the actual scope of work required to be completed.

We provide affordable electric charger installation in Sydney where the cost can include both the charger and the labour for the installation that is done by an experienced electrician.

EV fast charger installation costs shouldn’t be considered on their own in dollar terms, think about the time you are saving by ensuring your vehicle is charged quickly & ready for use whenever you need it.

The easiest way to charge your electric car is at home or the office is using an EV car charging station mounted to a wall or post. You can get up to 10x the power of a standard wall socket. You just have to connect your electric car and it will charge in a few hours or overnight depending on the hardware you install.

Electric car charger installation by an electrician in Sydney

Single phase EV charger
installation cost Tesla

$ 850 - $2200

+ installation labour $1268 + GST
  •

In the majority of cases you will only need single phase electrical wiring to be installed to operate your electric vehicle charging unit.

We would install a single phase RCD (safety switch) and isolation switch.

Single phase units are perfectly suitable even if they do charge at a slower rate compared to 3 phase chargers

3 phase EV charger
installation cost Tesla

$ 1200 - $2600

+ installation labour $1475 + GST
  •

3 phase electrical cabling is slightly harder to install and therefore comes at a higher cost. The actual hardware components are slightly more expensive as well. The benefit is a 3 phase unit will charge your electric vehicle faster.

For most daily use with overnight charging 3 phase charging is not required unless you want the fastest charge rate possible.

EV charging time comparison

It is important to remember that not all EV charger installations will need 3 phase setups even if you may think you require it. Below are examples of the time it would take to charge your electric vehicle from 0-100%

230v = Supply voltage

Amps = Amps at charging point

KW = Voltage x Amps

Standard power point
230v x 10A = 2.3kw per hour
So a 72kw hour battery would take
32 hours to fully charge from empty

Single phase EV charger
230v x 32A = 7.4kw per hour
So a 72kw battery would take
9.7 hours to fully charge from empty

3 phase EV Charger
230v x 3 x 32A = 22KW
So a 72Kw would take
3.2 hours to fully charge from empty.

Install an EV charging station for commercial use for Tesla vehicles

As we already mentioned the growth of electric vehicle use continues to increase year on year with many councils, large commercial businesses & retail shopping centres embracing their use.

Commercial EV charger station installation costs for a Tesla is higher than those installed in homes normally because multiple units are needed. Just think about the ones you see in Westfields where multiple points are lined up on a wall.

Commercial EV charger installation will normally require 3 phase power supply, multiple wall mounted units and all the necessary electrical cabling to ensure it can integrate to an existing structure or electrical systems. So an office or a retail shop can have charging points for multiple Tesla cars at the same time.

Where can an Tesla EV charger be installed?

We have installed countless electric vehicle (EV) chargers for homes and businesses that need to charge a Tesla Model 3 compact sedan, Model S mid-size luxury sedan, Model X luxury SUV and Model Y compact SUV models. We will help you choose the ideal location and ensure you get the EV charging station that meets your needs.

There are several key factors to consider when deciding where to install an EV charger: electrical capacity, accessibility, and weather protection. Charging units can be installed in underground car parks, a garage at home, on a wall outside a house or even specially installed post.

Electrical capacity is an important factor to consider when installing an EV charger in Randwick because the charger requires a certain amount of electrical power in order to charge the vehicle efficiently. This means that the location for the charger should have access to a dedicated electrical circuit that can provide the necessary power without overloading the electrical system.

Accessibility is another important factor to consider when installing an EV charger. Ideally, the charger should be located in a spot that is easy for the owner to access and use. This could be a garage, carport, or even outside the building near the parking area. The location should also be well lit and visible, so the owner can easily locate the charger when they need to use it.

Weather protection is important because an EV charger needs to be protected from the elements, including rain, snow, and extreme temperatures. This can be achieved by installing the charger in a covered area, such as a garage or carport, or by using a weather-resistant casing to protect the charger from the elements.

EV charger installation requirements for a Tesla

When installing an electric vehicle (EV) for a Tesla, there are certain requirements that must be met to ensure a safe and reliable charging system.

  • The electrical capacity of the building must be evaluated to determine if the existing electrical service can support the installation of an EV charger. If the building does not have sufficient capacity, it may be necessary to upgrade the electrical service before the charger can be installed with either a single or 3 phase connection created.

  • The charger must be installed by a licensed electrician in Randwick. In Sydney, electricians must be licensed by the New South Wales government and must comply with all relevant electrical safety regulations. This includes ensuring that the charger is properly grounded, that the wiring and connections are secure, and that the charger meets all relevant safety standards.

  • The charger must be connected to a dedicated electrical circuit to ensure that it has access to the necessary power to charge the vehicle efficiently. This dedicated circuit should be separate from any other electrical loads in the building to avoid overloading the electrical system.

  • The charger must be protected from the elements, including rain, snow, and extreme temperatures. This can be achieved by installing the charger in a covered area, such as a garage or carport, or by using a weather-resistant casing to protect the charger from the elements.

  • The charger must be tested to ensure that it is working correctly and safely. This may include testing the voltage, amperage, and grounding of the charger, as well as checking the connections and wiring for any defects.

  • The Tesla Wall Connector may be installed on any flat, vertical surface capable of supporting its weight (e.g. wall, pedestal, etc.).  It has to have ample clearance on all sides to allow the charge cable to loop around the unit and the charge handle to comfortably land in the side dock.

  • The maximum height is 1.52m, recommended height is 1.15m.

  • The Wall Connector alsh has to be connected to a local Wi-Fi network to get all the functionality it provides. So in some situations it shouldn’t be installed where there are lots of obstructions like concrete, masonry etc that can block a strong signal.

As you can see there are quite a few considerations but we can help you work out the best type of installation that suits your needs.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, electric vehicle (EV) chargers can be installed outside. Outdoor installations are becoming more common as more people use EVs and need access to charging while away from home.

When installing an EV charger outside, it is important to ensure that the charger is protected from the elements, including rain, snow, and extreme temperatures.

This can be achieved by using a weather-resistant casing or by installing the charger in a covered area, such as a carport or a covered parking spot. It is also important to ensure that the charger is installed in a visible and accessible location and that it has access to a dedicated electrical circuit to ensure efficient and safe charging.

While you may be able to install some components of an electric vehicle (EV) charger yourself, it is important to remember that the installation of a Tesla charger must be performed by a licensed electrician in most cases. This is because the installation of an EV charger involves the installation of electrical components and wiring, which must comply with all relevant safety regulations and standards.

By having a licensed electrician perform the installation, you can ensure that the charger is installed correctly and safely, and that it meets all relevant safety and performance standards.

Additionally, if something goes wrong with the charger, a licensed electrician will have the necessary expertise to diagnose and repair the issue, ensuring that you have a safe and reliable charging system for your EV.

This will depend on the existing electrical installation at your property,  If you have single phase or 3 phase power coming into your property (3 phase will give you more power and a faster charge). And what excess power you have available to use after using your other electrical appliances, we can do a few things to work with what power you have available to use for your EV charger.

  • Install a data logger (Electrical data logger we can install) for 7 days to measure the power being used over this period and what excess is left (this is normally done on larger instals and strata properties were multiple chargers are being installed)

  • Install Current clamps over the electrical cables in the distribution board, this will measure what current (power) is being used and allow the EV charger to charge using the remaining power (this will eliminate power circuits tripping due to overload).

  • We set the charger to charge at a rate that is within the installed circuit breakers limits and set the charging time of the vehicle to only charge at night when other electrical items are not drawing power from the electrical system.

  • Sometimes a combination of the above are needed.

This will depend on how you would like to charge your vehicle and what the condition and capacity of you existing wiring is like, if your house is older than around 30 years and you haven’t had any major electrical upgrades you may need to update the wiring to current electrical standards and for safety reasons, you may also want to upgrade from single phase to 3 phase if you want to install a faster charger although this can be costly.

This will depend on what power configuration you have connected to your building, if you look at your main distribution board and see that the main switch takes up 3 spaces  it will probably be 3 phase and this should allow you to install a 3 phase charger. We can assess this and confirm if it’s possible.

No not at this stage, but the Australian electrical wiring rules highly recommends each charger to be installed on a dedicated circuit and this will need to be done in most cases due to the load being drawn from the circuit when charging.

For a single charger between $2-3000 for a basic installation that includes the charger but this assumes there is no other customisation work required, new wiring installations etc.

Yes for convenience as some public chargers may be in use or faulty when trying to use them, so it’s always good to start the day with a good charge.

There is no real difference, it comes down to the amount you drive your vehicle the charge rates and if the public chargers are available.

Only qualified and licensed  electricians can install EV chargers in Sydney.

It is generally okay to charge an electric car every day, as long as the car’s battery is designed for daily charging and the charging schedule is managed properly. However, it’s important to note that overcharging or undercharging the battery can reduce its overall lifespan. It’s also important to consider the cost of electricity and how it may affect your budget.

One way to manage the charging schedule is to use a “trickle charge” method, which involves charging the car to a lower level, such as 80%, and then allowing the battery to charge the rest of the way as needed. This can help to prolong the battery’s lifespan, as well as manage the cost of electricity.

Another option is to take advantage of off-peak electricity rates, where the cost of electricity is lower during certain hours of the day. Charging the car during these times can help to minimize the cost of electricity.

It’s also important to use a quality charger that is compatible with the car and to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for charging the battery.

Using an incompatible charger or not following the manufacturer’s recommendations can cause damage to the battery and reduce its lifespan.

Yes, you can install a Tesla electric vehicle (EV) charger in your garage to use with a Model 3 compact sedan, Model S mid-size luxury sedan, Model X luxury SUV and Model Y compact SUV.

In fact, many people prefer to install chargers in their garages to provide convenient and protected charging for their EVs. When installing an EV charger in a garage, it is important to consider factors such as electrical capacity, accessibility, and weather protection.

The garage should have access to a dedicated electrical circuit with sufficient capacity to support the charger, and the charger should be installed in a location that is easily accessible and well lit.

To protect the charger from the elements, it is also important to ensure that the garage is properly ventilated and that the charger is protected from moisture and extreme temperatures.

With these considerations in mind, installing an EV charger in your garage can be a convenient and practical solution for charging your electric vehicle.

This will depend on the style of charger you want to install and at what rate you would like to charge your vehicle, we can asses your cabling to recommend the correct charger for you.

This will depend on your spare capacity in power, how you plan to charge your vehicle and the condition of your existing electrical installation but the largest domestic charger you can purchase and install would be a 3 phase 22KW charging unit. Factors that will determine whether you can install a 22KW charger are below.

  1. Do you have spare power in your electrical system after using your other electrical appliances?
  2. Can you vehicle receive power at this rate, not all vehicles can charge at a fast rate.
  3. Do you have 3 phase or single phase power coming into your building, 3 phase can handle up to 22KW while single phase can handle up to 7KW.

Yes all chargers we install can be installed outside they are IP54 rated to withstand rain.

Yes we can install multiple chargers and install a monitoring system if needed, We can also install a backbone power system for your future electrical vehicle chargers and then install chargers as each owner is ready, this applies to both strata and commercial properties.

In Sydney, electricians must be licensed by the New South Wales government to perform electrical work. However, not all licensed electricians have the experience and qualifications necessary to install an electric vehicle (EV) charger.

Installing an EV charger involves a number of specific challenges and requirements, including the need to assess the electrical capacity of the building, ensure proper grounding and connections, and protect the charger from the elements. It also requires knowledge of the different types of EV chargers and the charging requirements of different types of electric vehicles.

To ensure that an EV charger is installed correctly and safely, it is important to find an electrician who has specialist experience and qualifications in this area. This may include experience with the installation of EV chargers, knowledge of the latest safety regulations and standards, and a thorough understanding of the electrical requirements for different types of electric vehicles.

In Sydney, electricians who have the experience and qualifications necessary to install an EV charger may be members of professional organizations or may hold certifications from organizations such as the Clean Energy Council. By choosing an electrician with this expertise, you can ensure that your EV charger is installed correctly and safely, and that it will provide reliable and convenient charging for years to come.

We believe a tethered cable is best as it gets quite tiresome plugging in the charging cable after a while.

Yes you must be a licensed electrician to install EV Chargers in Sydney

Having an EV charger can  increase your home’s value because it will be seen as a modern luxury item by many people. With the rapid growth of electric vehicle usage it is only natural that people start asking if the home they are about to buy already has charging capabilities.

If your electric vehicle can handle the faster charging rate & your home’s electrical systems can handle the load then it makes sense to get a Level 2 charger installed.

In strata properties it must be discussed with the strata committee and agreed on for any installation of new charging points to be done.

22kw will charge your car faster, both units can be installed in a home but it will depend on whether you have 3 phase or single phase cabling at your home as to what can be installed

Only when using a trickle charger (the plug in device that comes with your car).
